Oh my friend—where are you going?

Are you struggling in your winter years

Showing the signs of a life well-lived

Or are you slowly, gently wandering from me

And toward that rainbow bridge?

If it’s the latter, I want to bark a sharp STAY!!

& leash you close to me, forbid you to leave

I could entice you to play with your beloved ball

Or lay beside your bed & stroke your face, ears & chest

In my mind I’m begging you not to go

We haven’t had enough time

But then again, it’d never be enough time

I see once more the moment we first met

You were ridiculously cute & near instantly

Found a place in my heart

That is so deeply etched now

It’s part of me, you’re part of me

I wish I understood why you can’t stay longer

We know eachother so well now

You know my moods even before I do

And your head on my lap

Has always been your way of easing the pain

Of letting me know somebody IS here

And, somehow, whatever it is

It will get better, it will be ok

Of simplistic joy, contented peace
